Overview

University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a public land-grant research university located in San Diego, California, United States. It was established in 1960 and is the southernmost of the ten campuses of the University of California. The university offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, enrolling 33,096 undergraduate and 9,872 graduate students. The university occupies 2,178 acres near the coast of the Pacific Ocean. UCSD is known for its strong emphasis on research, being ranked 7th among American universities for research and development expenditures in 2021 with $1.42 billion. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” and is considered a Public Ivy. Now, focusing on athletics, UCSD competes in more than 20 NCAA Division II sports, mainly in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The school’s athletic teams are known as the Tritons. They offer a variety of sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and water polo. The Tritons have had significant success in recent years. For instance, the men’s basketball team remained unbeaten and moved into a first-place tie with a win at Cal Poly. UCSD also hosts the annual Triton Invitational, a track and field event that attracts teams from all over the nation. The university’s commitment to athletics is evident in its facilities, programs, and the support it provides for its student-athletes.
