The Athletics, fondly known as the A’s, are set to embark on a new journey as they prepare for their much-anticipated move to Las Vegas in 2028. Before this, they will spend the 2025-27 seasons in Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park, following their final season in Oakland in 2024.
The A’s, who will not be associated with any city name during these three seasons, have been offered a three-year, $60MM lease of the Coliseum by the City of Oakland. This offer, a significant decrease from the previous $97MM, was not enough to sway the decision of Fisher and the Athletics ownership.
Sutter Health Park, home to the Sacramento River Cats, the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, will host the A’s home games for the next three seasons. This unique arrangement allows fans to enjoy both Major League Baseball and the cherished tradition of Minor League Baseball in West Sacramento.
However, the sharing of Sutter Health Park between the A’s and River Cats is just one of the options under consideration. There’s also a possibility that the River Cats could play home games across multiple sites, including the Coliseum and the Giants’ Oracle Park.

Despite these changes, River Cats president Chip Maxon reassures fans, “We are Sacramento’s team, we’re not going anywhere. If someone else were to play here, we’ve made it clear we want to play all 75 home games for the River Cats for the foreseeable future.”
As the A’s prepare for their move to Las Vegas, they face some logistical challenges. Sutter Health Park’s capacity is just over 14,000, significantly smaller than a standard big league stadium. Concerns have been raised about the size of the clubhouse and training room, the standards of the batting cages, and the lights at a Triple-A stadium. The location of the clubhouses, which are beyond the outfield wall as opposed to the MLB standard of being connected to the dugouts, is another issue.
A’s owner John Fisher expresses his anticipation for the move, “We look forward to making Sutter Health Park our home through our move to Las Vegas. We extend our appreciation to the Kings and the City of West Sacramento for hosting the A’s while we work to complete our new ballpark in Las Vegas.”
As the A’s gear up for their move to Las Vegas, fans and players alike eagerly await the completion of their new home. The move signifies a new chapter in the history of the Athletics, promising exciting times ahead for the team and their fans.
