The Oakland Athletics, colloquially known as the A’s, have recently unveiled the renderings of their new domed stadium in Las Vegas. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the team’s journey towards establishing a new home base in the city.
The design of the new stadium results from a collaboration between Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and HNTB. BIG, known for its innovative architectural designs, was the design lead. In contrast, HNTB, a firm with a long history in infrastructure design, acted as the sports/hospitality designer and architect of record.
The distinctive lines of a luxury sports car inspire the new stadium’s design. The tiered design splits the upper and lower seating bowls, bringing fans closer to the action than traditional ballparks and providing clear sight lines from every seat. The roof’s five overlapping layers, inspired by traditional baseball pennants, open to the north, allowing for natural light and views up the Strip while limiting direct sunlight and heat from the south.
The new stadium will have a capacity of 33,000 seats. One of its most distinctive features is the world’s largest cable-net glass window, facing the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevards. The ballpark is designed to include an 18,000-square-foot jumbotron, making it the largest screen in MLB.
The new stadium will be built on the Tropicana site, which is located on the Las Vegas Strip. The A’s will play home games at a minor league ballpark in Sacramento starting next season while the Las Vegas stadium is under construction. The new stadium is a $1.5 billion project. The funding process specifics have not yet been disclosed.
The unveiling of the A’s new domed stadium in Las Vegas marks a new era for baseball in the city. This development follows a similar path to that of the Raiders, who also unveiled the design of their new stadium, the Allegiant Stadium when they moved to Las Vegas³. The Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, is notably the largest entertainment venue in Las Vegas³. The introduction of the A’s new stadium will undoubtedly add to the dynamic atmosphere and liveliness of the Las Vegas Strip.
