Grant Rice, affectionately known as “Coach Rice,” has been the head basketball coach at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, since 2001. Over his tenure, he has guided the Gaels to an impressive 12 Nevada State Championships. In 2020, he celebrated a significant milestone in his coaching career by earning his 500th career victory as head coach.

Rice grew up in California and played high school basketball at Claremont High School. He later played college basketball at UNLV. His love for the sport and his experience as a player have greatly influenced his coaching philosophy and approach.

In addition to his coaching duties, Rice serves as the Athletic Director at Bishop Gorman, overseeing 25 sports. He also served a four-year term on the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee from 2015-2018. Rice is currently the Co-Director of the Annual Tarkanian Classic Basketball Tournament in December as well as the Big Time AAU event in July.

In December 2023, Rice became Nevada’s all-time winningest boys basketball coach, claiming his 565th victory when the Gaels defeated Bellevue (Washington) 67-60 in the Jersey Mike’s Division championship game at the Desert Holiday Classic in Rancho Mirage, California. Under Rice’s leadership, the Gaels have won 13 state championships, the most titles won by any boys coach. They won nine straight from 2012 to 2020.

Off the court, Rice is a dedicated family man. He and his wife, Brooke, have three children – Carli, Blake, and Drew. His brother Dave was the head basketball coach at UNLV from 2011-2016 and is currently an assistant coach at the University of Washington.

Grant Rice’s dedication to his students, his teams, and the sport of basketball is unparalleled. His legacy at Bishop Gorman High School continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
