Aaliah Spaights and the Gaels stand tall for the 5A State Championship pre-game national anthem.
When you think of high school superstars, you think of Bishop Gorman’s Aaliah Spaight. This 5’8″ basketball sensation made a splash this year on the basketball scene as a Sophomore and amassed enough sports awards to fill an entire trophy case. Let’s take a look at some of her stand-out accomplishments this year:
2023-2024 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year
Aaliah Spaight, a sophomore guard from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, was named the 2023-2024 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. This prestigious award, now in its 39th year, recognizes the nation’s most elite high school athletes. Aaliah’s exceptional performance on the court, averaging 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 4.4 steals per game, led the Gaels to the Class 5A state championship.
MaxPreps Nevada High School Player of the Year
In addition to the Gatorade Player of the Year, Aaliah was also named the 2023-24 Nevada MaxPreps High School Player of the Year. MaxPreps, America’s source for high school sports, recognized Aaliah’s outstanding performance in leading the Gaels to a 24-4 record and the Class 5A state championship.
Nevada Preps 5A Offensive Player of the Year
Aaliah’s stellar performance also earned her the title of the 2024 Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year. During her teamโs three-game postseason run to the title, she averaged 23 points, 8.3 rebounds, six assists, and six steals per game. Her court awareness and offensive prowess were key factors in leading the Gaels to their State Championship victory.
Nevada Preps All-Southern Girls Basketball First Team
Aaliah was also named to the Nevada Preps All-Southern Girls Basketball First Team. This recognition is a testament to her exceptional skills and contribution to the team’s success.
Winning the Nevada 5A Girls State Championship
The crowning achievement of Aaliah’s 2023-2024 season was leading the Gaels to the Nevada 5A Girls State Championship. In the championship game, Aaliah scored a game-high 23 points, including 15 4th quarter points, helping Bishop Gorman beat perennial power Centennial 57-53. This victory marked the Gaels’ first state championship win since 2010, snapping Centennial’s streak of eight consecutive titles.
What’s Next?
Aaliah is preparing to compete with Team Why Not on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer. Nike EYBL is a top recruiting platform for high school athletes aspiring to earn NCAA Division I basketball scholarship offers. This will be her opportunity to build on the momentum and successes of her Sophomore season, continuing to build a nationwide buzz around her dynamic play style.
Furthermore, she will participate in the Section 7 event in Arizona this summer in June. This event is part of the June Scholastic Events sanctioned by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and the NCAA. Itโs a significant platform where high school teams play in front of college coaches, providing Aaliah with a fantastic opportunity to attract even more attention from college recruiters. We have already heard from several scouts who will be in attendance to see her during this summer event.
